Smarter regulation unveiled to cut red tape and grow the economy

On 10 May, the first dynamic package of deregulatory reforms to grow the economy, cut costs for businesses and support consumers, was unveiled.
Taking advantage of post-Brexit freedoms, the Government will remove unnecessary red tape and regulatory burdens, ensuring rules and regulation for British businesses is proportionate and takes into consideration wider impacts on consumers, innovation and competition – as well as direct costs.

Factories receive government support to grow the economy, cut emissions and reduce energy costs

Factories producing some of the country’s best-known beers, cereals, soft drinks and cars will receive government support to reduce their energy costs and cut carbon emissions. The Industrial Energy Transformation Fund (IETF) supports businesses using high amounts of energy to reduce their fossil fuel using innovative low-carbon technologies. This will help companies save on their energy costs, which in turn will safeguard British jobs and help grow the economy – one of the government’s 5 priorities.

Apply for the Energy Bills Discount Scheme support for Energy and Trade Intensive Industries (ETIIs)

Use this service if you are a UK business or organisation in an ETII sector that needs to apply for the Energy Bills Discount Scheme support. Eligible organisations will have 90 days from the scheme introduction date of 26 April 2023 to apply for the higher support. New organisations or newly eligible organisations will have 90 days to apply from the date at which they become eligible.

  • Alex Chalk KC MP as Lord Chancellor and Secretary of State for Justice
  • James Cartlidge MP as a Minister of State in the Ministry of Defence
  • Gareth Davies MP as Exchequer Secretary to the Treasury
  • Lord Offord of Garvel as a Parliamentary Under Secretary of State in the Department for Business and Trade, in addition to his current role as a Parliamentary Under Secretary of State in the Scotland Office
  • The Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster, Rt Hon Oliver Dowden CBE MP, has also been appointed Deputy Prime Minister
