Cumbria Coastal Community Forest

Cumbria Coastal Community Forest is an exciting new project aiming to introduce more trees into the landscape along the western coast of Cumbria, from Barrow in the south to Carlisle in the north.

Grant funding is available from Cumbria County Council for tree planting schemes which can range in size and include different types of tree planting – from single trees or hedgerows to large-scale woodland. There is also funding available to support communities in accessing these green spaces e.g. footpaths, benches and interpretation boards.

Project partners, Cumbria Woodlands, will help you to develop a woodland creation plan and be able to support you through the application process.

They are now actively seeking sites to plant this winter so please get in touch with Cumbria Woodlands via their Advisory Service if you wish to propose a site: Contact | Cumbria Woodlands.

You do not need to be the landowner to propose a site but it is advised that you discuss with the landowner before making contact.

You can find more information about our project by visiting the below websites:

Counter Terrorism Policing’s winter vigilance campaign

This campaign encourages people to look out for each other this winter and help keep everyone safe. Top tips for staff and employers include:

  • Stay alert and trust your instincts
  • Be aware of who you let into your office building, keep doors closed when necessary
  • Report any suspicious activity to your manager, the emergency services or to Action Counters Terrorism (ACT) in confidence
  • Call 999 as an emergency

The police service has released a short public information film with advice on the steps to take in the rare event of a firearms or weapons attack.

A campaign toolkit has been created, which contains key messages and assets.

UTC Mentors

Cumbria Youth Alliance are looking for mentors to work with students from years 12 + 13 in January / February 2023 to support our ‘Call to Social Action’ programme.

CYA delivery staff lead the sessions, and we ask that a mentor joins the programme to work with a group of approx. 6 young people to help them come up with a social action project and present their idea over a period of 4 – 6 sessions (depending on school.) A mentor is there to give young people an insight into the real world, build aspiration and motivation and show young people that there are many avenues and careers to explore, it is not a one size fits all.

These are the dates for January 2023:

  • UTC – Tuesdays from 14:00 – 16:00 for 4 sessions starting 31st January (with 1 week off for half term) with years 12+13 – STEM focussed.
