Geographical Indications (GI) Conference by Defra

Defra will be hosting an event to celebrate UK GIs and to provide information about the UK GI schemes on Wednesday 15th June 9.15am to 1pm.

About this event

Food, drink and agricultural products with a geographical connection or that are made using traditional methods can be registered and protected as intellectual property. This protection is called a geographical indication (GI) and guarantees a product’s characteristics or reputation, authenticity and origin.

The UK has a proud and growing food reputation, and GIs play an important role as exemplars of our quality produce. We are committed to celebrating the success of these products and driving further market access to make sure they are enjoyed around the world.

Join us, and a range of guest speakers, as we celebrate UK food and drink, consider the value and purpose of GIs and discuss possible areas for development under the UK GI Schemes.

Who is this event for?

We would like to see a wide-range of attendees, including current GI producers and producer associations, prospective GI producers and applicants, retailers, local authorities and those involved in the control of the scheme, Regional Food Groups and other relevant organisations with an interest in iconic UK food and drink.

This ½ day online event will include:

  • An introduction from Victoria Prentis, the Minister of State for Farming, Fisheries and Food, with opportunity for Q&A.
  • A keynote speech from Ned Palmer, author of A Cheesemonger’s History of the British Isles, on the interweaving of history, place and food.
  • An overview of the UK GI Schemes and consideration of the international context.
  • Case studies, showcasing real-world opportunities and examples of GIs in production, marketing and international trade.
  • Introductions to key GI policy areas and possible future workshops, including applications, promotion and producer verification.
