Low Carbon Solutions Workshop

ECO I North West are pleased to invite you to their Low Carbon Solutions Workshop for leisure and events SMEs on Tuesday, 19th April, 8am – 2pm at Fellfoot National Trust, Newby Bridge, Windermere.

In this session you’ll be equipped with guidance and contacts to make your low carbon future planning specific and achievable. The aim of this workshop is to define key parameters in the leisure and events industry to map out the scale of opportunities for your low carbon evolution.

Are you ready to make practical low carbon changes across your business? Then join ECO-I NW to learn more about:

  • Reducing carbon in the leisure and events sector: understanding sources, scale, and impact.
  • Carbon foot printing: why is it important, what is it and how does it work?
  • Developing carbon action plans and how to measure, manage and tailor them for your business.
  • Ensuring carbon is not the only consideration in event management – ecology, community, economy.

You’ll also hear from their guest speakers on their work to reduce the environmental impact within the leisure and events industry:

Shane Ohly, Chief Executive Officer, Ourea Events.

The business is internationally renowned as the organisers of various very challenging mountain running races including the Montane Dragon’s Back Race, Salomon Skyline Scotland and the Cape Wrath Ultra. Ourea Events has been a member of the 1 % For The Planet for over a decade and is widely acknowledged as an industry leader in sustainable events and good practice.

Tom Rumsey, Senior Partnerships and Programming Manager, National Trust.

Alongside his role with the NT, Tom is also an outdoor enthusiast, event organiser and qualified Mountain Leader. Tom has worked on events ranging from charity walks, ultra-marathons, cycle sportives and is Operations Manager for Kendal Mountain Festival. An experienced sustainability and environmental practitioner in a past life, Tom has always strived to bring a real environmental and social ethos into how events are organised.

Laura Ruxton, Sticklebarn Business Development Manager, National Trust.

Laura joined the National Trust as the Sticklebarn Business Development Manager in 2015. Prior to joining the National Trust Laura spent eleven years with the international development NGO Oxfam, primarily working as a Retail Development Consultant and Project Manager before spending time as Head of Commercial Services leading the Building and Estate Service Teams. Moving to the Trust represented a want to be closer to home and to play an active part in maintaining, developing and caring for the Lake District. Laura has completed many of the iconic Lakeland Trail races including the Lakeland 50, Lakeland Trails from 10k – 110k, Brecca swim- run, Cumbria Way Ultra as well as both the OCC and Maxi-race Annecy in the Alps. In addition, she has been a regular supporter and marshal for many events throughout the Lakes. As part of the National Trust, she has delivered a range of trail event from Langdale Night Runner to the Grasmere Gallop. No longer a runner she is now focused on swimming and is currently training for the Coniston End-to-End swim.

You’ll also have chance to put your questions forward and learn from their expertise.

Throughout the day, you’ll take part in practical planning and behaviour change exercises, led by their expert team, and end the day by learning more about funding and research support opportunities, along with time for collaboration and discussion with other local SMEs.
