Background
La’al Sauna is the first outdoor, wood-fired horsebox sauna business based in the Lake District, founded and run by a creative entrepreneur passionate about wellbeing and innovation. Inspired by the growing sauna trend across the UK, the business launched its first unit, YAN, in January 2023, partnering with the National Trust to operate within the UNESCO World Heritage site. La’al Sauna quickly gained popularity among locals and visitors alike, despite a challenging first year.
The Challenge
As bookings increased, La’al Sauna’s single sauna (seating five people) struggled to meet growing demand, especially over peak periods like Christmas and New Year, resulting in waiting lists. Expanding seating capacity by creating a second sauna, TAN, became essential. However, financial constraints were significant—initial funding came from a Befund loan and Universal Credit, with limited capital available to fund expansion. Furthermore, the business faced formidable logistical challenges securing locations, complicated by strict National Trust restrictions tied to water safety concerns that eventually led to losing both summer and winter sites.
The Solution
Supported by business adviser Gail Gravett and guidance from Cumbria Business Growth Hub, La’al Sauna successfully applied for the Rural Enterprise Prosperity Fund (REPF) grant provided by Westmorland & Furness Council and received £5,999.90. The grant, combined with a second Befund loan, financed the purchase of a second horsebox, all necessary build materials and a sauna stove, and website updates. Despite setbacks with location permissions, La’al Sauna persevered and secured a new site at Bank Ground Farm on the eastern shore of Coniston Water. Currently, La’al Sauna operates the new TAN sauna at Bank Ground Farm and plans to operate both units from October 2024 after the peak season. The business has become a notable part of the region’s wellness and tourism landscape, recently gaining exposure through a UK Wild Sauna guidebook.
The Impact
The REPF grant has been a critical enabler for La’al Sauna’s growth. The second sauna has increased seating capacity, addressing demand bottlenecks and enabling La’al Sauna to cater to larger groups and peak season bookings more effectively. Although still operating as a sole trader, the business is better positioned to increase revenue, expand its customer base, and strengthen its market presence in the Lakes region. The partnership with Bank Ground Farm has provided stability after a turbulent period of site challenges, while continued support from local organisations like the Cumbria Chamber of Commerce has been fundamental.
