DW Whitson transforms old milk byre using Growth Hub grant

Background

DW Whitson evolved from supplying labour exclusively to agriculture and automotive repairs into a limited company and supply business in 2014. As the business continued to expand, the need arose for increased workforce capacity and improved administration facilities. This necessitated the development of a new office space, which would also incorporate a small retail area to better serve customers.

The Challenge

With growing cashflow and a strong eagerness to progress, DW Whitson saw an opportunity to transform a semi-derelict outbuilding into a functional office and retail space. The building in question was an old brick-built milk byre that had been used for livestock, and later for storage of parts and stock. However, its condition and limited utility presented a challenge to the company’s expanding operational needs.

The Solution

The company undertook a redevelopment project to convert the former milk byre into a modern office environment. To help fund this project they contacted Cumbria Business Growth Hub about grant funding support, applied for a capital grant funded by the Rural England Prosperity Fund, provided by Cumberland Council and received £14,980.85. The new space now includes four workstations, a small retail unit, a kitchen, and staff toilet facilities. This conversion created a significantly better working environment and enhanced the overall customer experience and impression.

The process was expedited thanks to a clear deadline, which allowed for swift completion and efficient project management.

The Impact

The improved working conditions have had a profound effect on staff retention; DW Whitson is confident that without these enhancements, they would not have been able to keep their workforce. Since the project’s completion, the business has expanded considerably, now requiring even more staff to meet growing demands.

The company regards the redevelopment as a highly positive step forward and is enthusiastic about future opportunities to continue improving and growing.
