The challenge
Needed to transition away from peat-based compost to reach sustainability goals and align with UK Gov's directive to phase out peat due to its carbon emissions.
The solution
Applied for funding to purchase a soil steriliser which removes weeds and pathogens from old compost using steam, allowing it to be recycled. This removes the need to continuously produce new peat-based compost. Larch Cottage was awarded £28,303.47, covering 30.6% of the equipment’s cost via the Rural England Prosperity Fund, provided through Westmorland and Furness Council.
