Cumbria’s business community came together in force this week as Cumbria Chamber of Commerce hosted a powerful and inspiring International Women’s Day event at the Greenhill Hotel.

With this year’s theme “Give to Gain”, the event brought together business leaders, entrepreneurs and professionals from across the county for a day of honest conversations, shared experiences and meaningful inspiration.

The packed room of both women and men created a vibrant atmosphere as attendees heard from an outstanding line-up of speakers who explored leadership, resilience, workplace culture and the importance of supporting others in business and in life.

Honest and Powerful Keynote

Headline speaker Suzi Perry, one of the UK’s most respected broadcasters, delivered a deeply personal and captivating keynote that resonated with the audience.

Speaking openly about her career journey, Suzi reflected on the determination that helped her break into broadcasting, revealing how she secured her first opportunity simply by picking up the phone and asking for a chance.

She spoke candidly about the realities of working in the media industry, including the pressures of public scrutiny, negative headlines and the challenges faced by women in competitive environments. Her stories of meeting and interviewing global figures were balanced with honest reflections on navigating unwanted attention, workplace politics and the resilience required to succeed.

In a particularly moving moment, Suzi shared how losing her mother three years ago changed her perspective on life and work. The event marked only her second speaking engagement since that loss, making the moment all the more powerful for those in the room.

Her authenticity and openness struck a chord with attendees, many of whom described the talk as both inspiring and deeply relatable.

Important Conversations for Modern Workplaces

The event also featured a series of expert speakers addressing some of the most important workplace topics facing businesses today.

Caroline Rayner from Knights explored issues including neurodiversity, flexible working, menopause in the workplace, pregnancy and maternity transitions, and tackling harassment, highlighting how businesses can create inclusive environments where people can thrive.

Julie Clayton from Eden Valley Hospice and Jigsaw, Cumbria’s Children’s Hospice, spoke about the importance of community and how small acts of giving can make a meaningful difference to others.

Jade Clifford shared her personal journey with ADHD, offering an honest insight into her experiences before closing her talk with a powerful poem she had written herself.

Emma Sherlock from Stan Sherlock Associates spoke about the company’s growth journey, the challenges faced along the way and the decision to introduce unlimited staff holidays as part of a culture focused on trust and wellbeing.

Panel Discussion: Bringing “Give to Gain” to Life

The event concluded with a panel discussion exploring the meaning of this year’s theme, “Give to Gain.”

Panellists discussed their inspirations, how generosity and support can strengthen businesses and communities, and the importance of balancing giving to others while protecting personal boundaries and wellbeing.

They also explored what the workplace of the future could look like if the principles of give to gain were embedded into everyday business culture.

A Celebration of Women in Business

The event created a powerful sense of connection and shared purpose among attendees, with many describing the day as both energising and inspiring.
