Described by The New Statesman as 'artistically sharp and stunningly situated', Theatre by the Lake is proud to be Cumbria’s leading producing theatre. Since opening in 1999 on the shores of Derwentwater, we have grown into a vibrant cultural hub, nurturing the development of Cumbrian artists and storytellers, whilst welcoming more than 100,000 people through our doors each year.

Alongside our mainstage productions, we run award-winning community touring programmes, taking high-quality theatre directly to towns and villages across Cumbria, ensuring that isolated and rural communities have access to inspiring, professional work. We also take original Cumbrian stories on national tours, including a recent tour of Steel, a story based in Workington, which visited venues across the UK before ending with a run in London.

Recent recognition reflects our impact: Theatre by the Lake was named Best Arts/Cultural Venue at the Cumbria Life Awards and received the UK Theatre Award for Excellence in Touring, celebrating our dedication to reaching audiences across the county and beyond.
